In 1631 Shah Jahan, emperor during the Mughal empires period of greatest prosperity, was grief stricken when his wife, Mamta Mahal, died during the birth of their fourteenth child. Determined to honor her, Jahan employed thousands of artisans and craftsmen to construct a mausoleum like none that had been built before. The resulting structure is now considered the finest example of Mughal architecture in the world. The Taj Mahal Finial uses this iconic structures main dome as inspiration.
